      Free admssion. Self guided walking tour of Decatur's Civil War sites. Brochures available at Decatur Visitors Center, Old State Bank and Bank Street merchants.

    • Cook's Natural Science Museum - 412 13th St. SE - 256-350-9347
      Open Mon to Sat. 9 to noon and 1 to 5, Sunday 2 to 5. Free admission. Provides extensive collections of beautiful and exotic insects, mounted birds, animals, rocks and minerals, sea shells and coral. Large theatre to view natural science films. Also includes live and interactive exhibits.

      Open Mon, Weds, Fri, 2 to 4 and by appointment. Admission charged. Completed 1851 for Rev. Robert Donnell, founder, Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Later, home for principals of North Alabama Agricultural School, Athens High and Middle School. Guided Tours. Available for meetings, receptions and small weddings.

      Open Mon to Sat. 10 to 5, restaurant open for dinner, Free admission. Historic shopping district features array of specialty shops and antiques. Original art, toys, home accessories, clothing, jewelry and fine dining.

      Open Mon to Fri 10 to 5, Sat. 9 to noon. Free Admission. Once home to George S. Houston, attorney, member of U.S. senate, and governor of Alabama twice. House built in 1835. Features Houston family coat of arms, family portraits and drawing room furnishings. Family History Room.

      Open Mon to Fri. 8 to 4:30, Sat & Sun. 1 to 4:30. Free admission. Encompasses Cherokee council house museum, portion of Black Warriors path, largest Woodland ceremonial Indian mound in Alabama, and largest Copena Indian burial mound. Park has lake and fishing pier.

      Self Guided Tour, Alabama's largest concentration of historic Victorian homes along 116 acres in Old Decatur and Albany historic districts.

    • The Altar of the New Testament and Founders Hall - 300 N. Beaty St - 256-233-8215
      Open Mon to Fri 8 to 4:30. Free admission. 1840's Greek Revival Founders Hall sits on campus of athens State College, state's oldest college. Altar consists of elegant wood carvings which tell story of New Testament.

      Open Mon to Fri. 9:30 to Noon and 1 to 4:30, call ahead for weekend and holiday hours. Free admission. Pre Greek Revival structure is oldest bank in the state. Used as hospital during Civil War, one of only 4 buildings left standing when war ended.

      Open March to Sept. Tues. to Sat. 9 to 4, Oct. to Feb. daily 9 to 5. Free admission. Orientation video, observation building, 2 short walking trails. 10,000 sq ft interpretive center with wildlife and habitat exhibits. Best wildlife viewing is 1 to 2 hours before sunset in Dec to Feb.
